The choice you still sign every month

Work can leave the building. The signature never does, and that is the point of the arrangement rather than a flaw in it.

Fig. 01Why the pen stays with you

You own the business, you carry the risk, and you are the one the agencies and the bank hold responsible if something has gone wrong. No engagement letter anywhere changes that arrangement, and any that promised to would be worth refusing.

Fig. 02What a good outside seat does about it

It makes signing easy by making the choice clear, which means naming the decision, pricing each option, and saying which way somebody would go and for what reason.

The failure mode is a signature requested with no reasoning attached, which turns an owner into a rubber stamp on their own business.

Fig. 03Which choices come back to you

What to pay yourself, when to take money out, what to buy before the year closes, whether to borrow and who to hire. Every one of those was always yours and every one of them stays yours, because they are decisions about the business rather than about the record of it.

Fig. 04What does not need your signature

Whether a payment belongs in repairs or improvements, which day the filing goes out, and how the close gets done and in what order. Those are questions about mechanism, and answering them is somebody else's job.

Handing those over is the entire reason to have the seat, and taking them back is how owners end up doing the job twice.

Fig. 05What arrives before a signature

The choice stated plainly, what each way costs, and a recommendation with the reasoning attached to it.

The strip shows the shape of that. No decision of yours is printed here.

Fig. 06The pen does not move

Sitting outside the payroll is ordinary, and it is not a CPA credential. This desk holds none. Audits, reviews and opinions that express assurance stay with a firm that holds one, no matter who signs the engagement. If your bank wants a report that cannot be signed here, that is said early and you get the board's own lookup instead. The long form of that sits on the disclosures page.

Fig. 07Why a recommendation needs the whole picture

A choice priced without the return in view is half a choice. What you take out, what you pay yourself and what you buy all land on the same page eventually, and usually on the same page.

Breadth is the desk pricing the choice also being the one that files the return it lands on, so the number you sign against is the real one. Height is somebody willing to say which way they would go, which is what makes a signature quick.

Fig. 08The way owners put it afterwards

I wanted somebody to take work off me. What I wanted was to make the same decisions with better information.

You will be talking to the Steven Palmieri practice. A sentence about the choice you sign is enough to start.
